Snuggled along the Western Ghats, Coorg is an administrative district in the South western part of the state of Karnataka. Spread over 4102 square kilometers, this district boasts of showcasing one of the finest tourist attractions of the country.
Endowed with mist clad mountains, meandering streams, thick tropical forests, cascading waterfalls, resourceful National Parks and endless expanses of cardamom, coffee and orange plantations, Coorg makes a virtual paradise for the lovers of natural beauty and charm. Perhaps it is because of its inimitable and unparallel elegance and beauty that it is often dubbed as “the Scotland of India” or “Kashmir of South India”.
Tadiandamol, Brahmagiri and Pushpagiri are some of the scintillating peaks that adorn Coorg. The Nagarhole Ntional Park makes a perfect haven for the Bird Watchers while the renowned Omkareshwara Temple serves to strengthen one’s bond with the Almighty.
Coorg is placed between Dakshina Kannada in the North West, the Hassan District in the North, Mysore in the East and the Kannur district of Kerela in the South. Being at an elevation of about 1580 meters above the sea level, Coorg offers nothing but sheer joy and enjoyment amidst the cool, unpolluted and refreshing air of nature. It comprises of three big talukas, namely, Veerajapete, Somvarapete and Madikeri, which is also the district headquarters.
Coorg is basically an anglicized name of the place that was originally known as Kodagu. Believed to be the land of the Kodavas, the descendants of the mighty Greeks, Kodagu was given this name of Coorg by the British. Others believe that Kodagu is derived from the Kannada word “Kudu” meaning steep or hilly.
